Laser treatment of pain
It took more than 2,000 years to understand what pain is.

Pain is not a disease. Pain is a warning signal that accompanies so many diseases. Pain tells you that something is going wrong in your body, especially in a particular part of it, and it is urging you to take some appropriate action to eradicate that pain and help normalize that body region.

Three basic effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) which have been well proved in medical sciences are:
  1. biostimulative;
  2. analgesic (pain-killing);
  3. anti-inflammatory.
The analgesic or pain-killing effect of LLLT acts on different levels with different mechanisms. Here are some explanations to this effect of laser pain removal:
  1. increases the levels of beta-endorphine in spinal liquor;
  2. increases urinary excretion of glucocorticoid which is an inhibitor of beta-endorphine sysnthesis;
  3. increases the pain threshold through a complex electrolytic block mechanism of nerve fibres. The permeability of the nerve cells' membranes for Na/K is decreased, thus causing hyperpolarisation;
  4. increases urinary excretion of serotonin which negatively affects neurotransmission;
  5. decreases release of chemical substances like histamine, a powerful inflammatory and algesic agent, and acetylcholine, another algesic agent that is blocked through an increase in acetylcholinerase activity;
  6. decreases synthesis of bradykinine, a potent algesic agent that normally irritates nociceptors and causes pain;
  7. alters the noradrenaline-adrenaline activity;
  8. increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production;
  9. improves local microcirculation thereby increasing oxygen and nutrients' supply to the hypoxic cells as well as parallelly removing waste products gathered in this area due to former bad circulation;
  10. increases lymphatic drainage, thereby reducing oedema (swelling).

The Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Laser Therapy

The characteristics of inflammation are pain (dolor), swelling (tumor), redness (rubor), heat (calor) and loss of function (dysfunction).

The anti-inflammatory effect of laser therapy combines its biostimulative and analgesic effects. Laser therapy improves local micro-circulation which consequently reduces swelling (oedema) whereas its analgesic effect reduces pain.

It should be noted that LLLT appears to have a depressive effect on the activity of viruses and bacteria, known as virostatic and bacteriostatic effects, respectively.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) can stimulate tissue repair, reduce inflammation and relieve pain in various disorders.

The three leading areas are:
  1. Soft tissue injuries.
  2. Joint (articular) conditions.
  3. Back and neck pain
Post-operative pain also responds well to laser therapy.
